Eyelash Extension Aftercare: How to Keep Your Lashes Looking Their Best

By June 1, 2026Tips & Trends

Beautiful lash extensions are an investment, and how you care for them determines whether they last two weeks or six. The good news is that aftercare is simple once you know the rules. Follow these guidelines to keep your lash extensions looking full and flawless for as long as possible.

The First 24 to 48 Hours

The adhesive that bonds your extensions needs time to cure fully. For the first day or two, keep your lashes dry: avoid water, steam, saunas, and heavy sweating. This is the single most important window for ensuring a strong, lasting bond, so plan your appointment around it and skip the pool or intense workouts immediately after.

Keep Them Clean

It may sound counterintuitive, but clean lashes last longer. Oil, makeup, and debris weaken the adhesive and can lead to irritation. After the initial curing period, gently cleanse your lashes with a lash-safe, oil-free cleanser every couple of days, and let them air dry or fan them dry on a cool setting.

Avoid Oil-Based Products

Oil is the enemy of lash adhesive. Check that your cleansers, makeup removers, and moisturisers near the eye area are oil-free, as oil breaks down the bond and causes premature shedding.

Daily Habits That Protect Your Lashes

Avoid rubbing your eyes or tugging at your lashes, as this is the fastest way to lose them. Brush them gently each morning with a clean spoolie to keep them neat. Try to sleep on your back or side rather than face down, since pressing your face into a pillow can bend and dislodge extensions overnight.

Makeup Considerations

Skip waterproof mascara, which is difficult to remove without rubbing. In most cases you will not need mascara at all, since the extensions provide the volume. If you wear eyeliner, choose a non-oil formula and remove it carefully.

Booking Your Refill

Your natural lashes shed on their own cycle, so extensions gradually thin over two to three weeks. A refill every two to three weeks keeps them looking full. If you love a fuller look, you might explore volume lash extensions, or for a lower-maintenance option, a lash lift may suit you better.

Swimming and the Beach

After the initial curing period, extensions can handle water, but salt water and chlorine are tougher on the adhesive. Rinse with fresh water afterward, pat dry gently, and brush them back into shape.
