Waxing gives smooth, long-lasting results, and a little preparation makes the experience more comfortable and the results even better. Whether it is your first appointment or your tenth, these simple steps help you get the smoothest outcome with the least discomfort.
Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length
The most important rule is hair length. For wax to grip effectively, hair should be roughly the length of a grain of rice, about a quarter of an inch or five millimetres. If it is too short, the wax cannot grab it; too long can make the process more uncomfortable. Resist shaving in the days before, and aim for two to three weeks of growth since your last shave.
Exfoliate a Day or Two Before
Gently exfoliating the area a day or two beforehand removes dead skin and helps free any hairs trapped beneath the surface, which reduces the chance of ingrown hairs. Do not exfoliate on the same day, as the skin will already be sensitised by the treatment.
Keep Skin Clean and Dry
Arrive with clean skin free of heavy lotions, oils, or makeup in the area being waxed, as these can interfere with how the wax adheres. Lightly cleansed, dry skin gives the best grip.
Timing and Comfort
If you are sensitive to discomfort, avoid scheduling your appointment in the few days right before your period, when skin tends to be more sensitive. Some people find it helps to avoid caffeine beforehand, which can heighten sensitivity. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing afterward reduces friction on freshly waxed skin.
What to Expect During the Appointment
Your therapist will work efficiently, section by section. Communicate openly about any sensitive areas or concerns, and let them know if it is your first time so they can talk you through each step. If you would like more detail on the process, our body waxing guide covers what happens during a session.
Aftercare for Smooth, Calm Skin
For the first day, avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming, and intense sun on the waxed area, as freshly waxed skin is more reactive. Keep the area clean, wear loose clothing, and avoid heavy products. Begin gently exfoliating again a few days later to keep ingrown hairs at bay, and moisturise to keep skin soft.
How Often to Rebook
Waxing results typically last three to four weeks. Rebooking on a regular cycle keeps hair finer and the process easier over time, as covered in our guide to waxing in Bali.
