If you have never been to a spa before, the unfamiliarity can be the only thing standing between you and a deeply relaxing experience. The good news is that spa etiquette is simple, and a little preparation removes the guesswork entirely. This guide covers everything a first-time guest should know before a treatment in Bali, so you can arrive relaxed and leave even more so.
Arrive Early, Not Just On Time
Aim to arrive ten to fifteen minutes before your appointment. This gives you time to complete a brief health and preference form, change, use the bathroom, and settle your breathing before the treatment begins. Arriving flustered and on the dot means the first portion of your massage is spent simply winding down, which is time you would rather spend enjoying the work itself.
What Should You Wear?
Wear something comfortable and easy to remove. During most massage and body treatments you will be provided with disposable underwear or be invited to undress to your comfort level, and you remain covered with a towel or sarong at all times, with only the area being worked on exposed. Your therapist will always step out while you change and get settled under the covering.
Modesty and Comfort
Professional draping is standard practice, so there is no need to feel exposed. If you are more comfortable keeping your underwear on, that is completely fine. The most important thing is that you feel at ease, because relaxation is the entire point.
Speak Up About Pressure and Preferences
Therapists are skilled, but they are not mind readers. If you prefer lighter or firmer pressure, find the room too cool, or want less conversation and more quiet, say so. A good therapist welcomes this feedback because it helps them tailor the treatment to you. Mention any injuries, allergies, pregnancy, or sensitive areas before you begin. If you are unsure which treatment suits you, our first-time spa guide is a helpful starting point.
Phones, Silence, and Shared Spaces
Switch your phone to silent and leave it in your bag. Part of what makes a spa restorative is the deliberate absence of digital noise. Keep your voice low in shared and waiting areas out of consideration for other guests who are mid-treatment.
Hydration and Timing
Avoid a heavy meal immediately before a massage, and skip alcohol beforehand. Drink water before and after your treatment, particularly after deep tissue work or a lymphatic drainage massage, to help your body process the effects. We cover this in more detail in our guide on how often to get a massage.
Is Tipping Expected in Bali?
Tipping is not obligatory in Bali, but it is appreciated and customary for good service. A tip of around ten percent, or whatever feels right for an exceptional experience, is a kind gesture for therapists who have looked after you well. It is never expected, and the quality of your treatment will never depend on it.
After Your Treatment
Give yourself a few unhurried minutes afterward rather than rushing straight back into your day. Sip water, move slowly, and let the calm settle. If you booked a body scrub or facial, your therapist may share simple aftercare advice worth following for the next day or two.
